The Accord Party has called for the immediate resignation of the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, over the controversy surrounding the freezing of the Osun State Government’s accounts.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Friday, the party’s National Chairman, Maxwell Mgbudem, commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for directing the anti-graft agency to reverse the account freeze.

Mgbudem described the President’s intervention as timely and necessary, but accused the EFCC of acting in a partisan manner ahead of the August 15 governorship election in Osun State.

He said the party had lost confidence in the current leadership of the commission, arguing that Olukoyede should resign for allegedly bringing the EFCC into disrepute. He added that if the EFCC chairman refuses to step down, the President should remove him from office to restore public confidence in the agency.

The Accord Party also urged security agencies, anti-corruption bodies and other democratic institutions to remain impartial and operate within the law throughout the election period.

It further called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure a free, fair and credible governorship election while encouraging civil society organisations, election observers, the media and opposition parties to remain vigilant against actions that could undermine the integrity of the poll.

The controversy followed the EFCC’s decision to freeze the Osun State Government’s accounts as part of an investigation into alleged financial crimes. President Tinubu later directed the commission to return to court and vacate the order, stating that actions taken by federal institutions are often attributed to the Presidency, regardless of whether he had prior knowledge of them.
