The Ogun State Government has issued a fresh flood warning ahead of the second phase of the 2026 rainy season, urging residents in vulnerable communities to remain vigilant and move to safer areas where necessary.

The advisory followed a forecast by the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet), which listed Ogun among states expected to experience heavy rainfall.

Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, said the second phase of the rainy season is expected to begin in September, with the state projected to record about 360mm of rainfall during the month.

He warned that prolonged rainfall, possible overflow from Oyan Dam and tidal fluctuations could increase the risk of river and coastal flooding, particularly around floodplains and waterways.

Residents in Isheri, Arepo, Mawere, Magboro, Akute, Warewa and parts of Abeokuta were advised to remain alert and relocate where necessary.

The warning also covers vulnerable coastal communities in Ogun Waterside, Ijebu East and Ipokia, as well as communities along the Ilo and Iju Rivers.

Fish farmers operating around floodplains and river corridors were advised to harvest their stocks promptly to minimise potential losses.

The government also directed relevant agencies, local authorities, emergency responders and community leaders to intensify monitoring, public awareness and flood-response measures.

Oresanya assured residents that the government would continue working with NiMet, the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) and other stakeholders to monitor weather and water conditions across the state.
