The people of Obeagu Town in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State have celebrated their 2026 Annual New Yam Festival, in a colourful display of culture, unity, thanksgiving, homecoming and the rich traditional heritage of the community.
The celebration, held at the Igwebuike Primary School Field, Obeagu, attracted sons and daughters of the community from within Nigeria and abroad, traditional rulers, government officials, political leaders, security personnel and other distinguished guests.
The annual festival provided an opportunity for the people to give thanks for the harvest, reconnect with their roots, strengthen communal bonds and showcase traditions passed down through generations.
The celebration commenced with an opening prayer led by Rev. Fr. Basil Ezika, setting a solemn and thanksgiving-filled atmosphere for the day’s activities.
This was followed by a welcome address by the President General of Obeagu Town Union, Chief D.C.P. Anthony Orji (Rtd.), who warmly welcomed Ndi Ichie, red-cap chiefs, elders, men, women, Umuada, youths and children, as well as sons and daughters of Obeagu at home and in the diaspora.
Chief Orji said the New Yam Festival was far more than an occasion for eating yam, dancing and merriment, describing it as an important opportunity for the people to return to their roots, celebrate their heritage, honour the wisdom of their ancestors, thank God for a successful farming season and renew the bonds of unity among the people.
He described the New Yam Festival as one of the oldest and most significant celebrations in Igbo society, noting that yam represents life, dignity, prosperity, survival and abundance.
According to him, the emergence of the new yam marks the successful completion of another farming cycle and represents renewed hope, food security and the reward of hard work.
The President General also stressed the importance of preserving Obeagu’s cultural identity in the face of modernisation and changing social circumstances.
He urged the people to continue upholding those aspects of their culture that promote dignity, morality, unity, communal responsibility and respect for their heritage.
Chief Orji further described the festival as a significant homecoming occasion, bringing together Obeagu people from different parts of Nigeria and across the world.
He maintained that the development of Obeagu could only be achieved through unity, collective effort, mutual respect and cooperation, while calling on the people to support initiatives focused on education, agriculture, entrepreneurship, women and youth development.
He particularly urged the younger generation to remain proud of their identity and cultural heritage wherever they find themselves.
Speaking in an interview, Chief Orji reiterated that the New Yam Festival remained an important platform for promoting unity, preserving cultural identity and bringing sons and daughters of Obeagu back home.
The Chairman of the Occasion, Mr. Chukwu Brown, formally addressed the gathering following the President General’s welcome address.
Mr. Brown welcomed the people and distinguished guests and commended Obeagu Town Union and the Planning Committee for sustaining the annual celebration and preserving the community’s cultural heritage.
He also emphasised the importance of unity and collective participation in driving community development.
Speaking in an interview, the Chairman of the Occasion further highlighted the significance of the celebration and encouraged the people to continue working together for the progress and development of Obeagu.
The Chairman of the Planning Committee, Ogbuefi Engr. Ani Chinedu Titus, also described the New Yam Festival as a celebration of joy, unity and abundance.
Engr. Ani, who disclosed that this was his third time serving as Chairman of the Planning Committee, expressed delight over the impressive turnout, noting that sons and daughters of Obeagu travelled from Lagos, Onitsha, Enugu, other parts of Nigeria and abroad to celebrate with their people.
He said the massive homecoming demonstrated the strong bond existing among the people of Obeagu, regardless of where they reside.
The celebration also attracted prominent personalities and representatives of government and political institutions who came to identify with the people.
Emeka Udeh represented the Distinguished Senator Osita Ngwu at the colourful celebration.
Members and candidates of various political parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), were also present.
Gubernatorial and senatorial candidates and other political stakeholders attended the festival, further demonstrating its importance as a cultural gathering capable of bringing together people across political affiliations and backgrounds.
Their presence reinforced the message that culture, community identity and development can provide common ground for the people irrespective of political differences.
NTDA HAILS OBEAGU FESTIVAL, HIGHLIGHTS TOURISM POTENTIAL
A major highlight of the event was a goodwill message from the Nigerian Tourism Development Authority (NTDA), delivered by its Deputy Director, Mr. Ebiloma Shaibu Demian.
The NTDA described the New Yam Festival as an important annual celebration deeply rooted in the cultural heritage and traditions of the Igbo people.
The Authority noted that the festival represents harvest, thanksgiving, unity and the collective identity of Ndi Igbo, while also providing an avenue for preserving and promoting Igbo cultural heritage and language.
It further emphasised the potential of cultural festivals to attract visitors, promote cultural exchange and contribute to local economic development.
The Authority commended the Enugu State Government for its efforts towards tourism development and promotion of the state’s cultural heritage.
It also expressed readiness to collaborate with the state government, public and private-sector stakeholders and local communities towards sustainable tourism development.
The NTDA particularly commended the Obeagu Town Union Executive and the Planning Committee for sustaining the festival and preserving the traditions and identity of the people.
CEREMONIAL CUTTING OF THE NEW YAM
One of the most significant moments of the celebration was the ceremonial cutting of the new yam, an age-long tradition that symbolically marks the official commencement of the consumption of the new harvest.
The ceremony was led by the President General of Obeagu Town Union, Chief D.C.P. Anthony Orji (Rtd.), who performed the ceremonial cutting before representatives of the various villages that make up Obeagu also took turns in the symbolic exercise.
The rite signified the collective acceptance of the new harvest by the community and represented thanksgiving to God for a successful farming season and abundance of food.
The participation of representatives from the different villages also reflected the unity and communal spirit of Obeagu.
Another historic moment was the presentation of a new yam cake by the beautiful ladies of Umuada Obeagu, marking what was described as the first time such a presentation had featured at the occasion.
The gesture was celebrated as another symbol of unity, harmony and the growing participation of women in preserving and enriching the cultural traditions of the community.
With the ceremonial rites completed, the atmosphere became increasingly festive as the people celebrated the new harvest and the official commencement of the new yam season.
OKOLOUDU SCHOLARSHIP INITIATIVE HONOURS 72 OUTSTANDING STUDENTS
Beyond the cultural festivities, education took centre stage as the Okoloudu Scholarship Education Initiative recognised and rewarded 72 outstanding students who emerged first, second and third in their respective classes across three primary schools and one secondary school in Obeagu Town.
The initiative is a project of SEEHDI – Centre for Social Empowerment, Entrepreneurship and Human Development Initiative, sponsored by Mr. Chukwudi Johnpaul Okolo, an illustrious son of Obeagu Town.
According to the organisers, the initiative was established as a deliberate investment in the future of Obeagu children, while also preserving and promoting the educational legacies of the Umuokoloudu Clan of Amorji Village.
The recognition provided an opportunity to celebrate the students’ academic performances while inspiring other pupils and students to embrace discipline, dedication and excellence in their studies.
Speaking during the presentation, the Chairman of the Educational Scheme, Mr. Jonas Anene Okoli, congratulated the beneficiaries for distinguishing themselves through hard work and academic commitment.
He urged the students to remain focused and continue striving for greater academic success, stressing that their achievements could serve as a foundation for a brighter future.
Okoli also presented learning materials to the students as part of the initiative’s support for their education.
He further disclosed that the scholarship scheme would extend its support to students currently in Senior Secondary School 3 (SS3), announcing plans to assist eligible beneficiaries with JAMB registration and the purchase of admission forms within the next year.
The initiative was widely regarded as a significant investment in the human capital of Obeagu, combining the celebration of cultural heritage with the promotion of education and youth development.
CULTURE, IDENTITY AND THE FUTURE
Other guests who spoke at the celebration also emphasised the importance of preserving the cultural heritage of Obeagu while embracing modern development.
Ogbuefi Orjiogbu Calistus Okechukwu said Obeagu was determined to embrace modern development without abandoning its cultural identity.
He stressed the need for the community to move with the changing times while ensuring that its traditions remain relevant and meaningful to younger generations.
Ogbuefi Chinedu Onyima, who attended from neighbouring Ugbo, described the New Yam Festival as an important cultural celebration that brings people together across Igboland and promotes unity, cultural identity and community development.
He said the close relationship between Ugbo and Obeagu made it important for the people to continue identifying with and celebrating one another.
Hon. Tochukwu Chukwu described the festival as an opportunity for friends, relatives and community members to reconnect, particularly with those who had travelled from different parts of Nigeria and abroad.
Mr. Kingsley Ogba thanked God for the successful celebration, particularly the peaceful atmosphere and favourable weather, while Ogbuefi Chijioke Okoro described the festival as a period of thanksgiving to Almighty God for the gift of life, good health and other blessings.
The celebration later came alive with colourful masquerade displays, Ogene performances, traditional music, dancing and other cultural activities.
The masquerades, adorned in colourful costumes and traditional regalia, entertained the audience with energetic performances, creating excitement among both young and old.
Beyond entertainment, the cultural displays offered younger members of the community an opportunity to witness and learn indigenous traditions handed down by their forefathers.
The 2026 Obeagu Annual New Yam Festival eventually ended on a joyful note, with the people reaffirming their commitment to unity, peace, cultural preservation, education and community development.
For Obeagu, the celebration was more than a festival of the new harvest. It was a powerful expression of identity, culture, homecoming, thanksgiving, education and communal unity.
The occasion demonstrated that while Obeagu continues to embrace modern development, its people remain determined to preserve the cultural values that define them and invest in the younger generation that will carry the community’s legacy forward.
