Veteran Nigerian poet and literary icon, Chief Alabi Ogundepo, has died at the age of 84.

Ogundepo, a native of Saki in Oyo State, reportedly died on Monday. His family announced his death in the early hours of Tuesday.

In a statement made available to NEWSMEN, Dupe Ogundepo-Falana described the late poet as an icon whose contributions to Nigerian literature would continue to inspire generations.

The family said details of his funeral arrangements would be announced later.

The statement read in part:

“Funeral arrangements and other details will be announced by the family in due course.

“The family kindly requests privacy and prayers as we come to terms with this irreparable loss.”

Ogundepo was recognised for his contributions to Nigerian literary works, particularly poetry, and his death marks the loss of a veteran voice in the country’s literary community.
