Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has approved an additional N115 million monthly subvention for the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), bringing the state government’s total monthly funding support to N276 million.

The intervention is part of efforts to address concerns surrounding the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), ESUT chapter, and strengthen the university’s capacity to meet its financial obligations.

The Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, disclosed this in a statement on Monday, saying the latest increase demonstrates the administration’s commitment to the welfare of workers and the uninterrupted education of students.

According to him, the state government previously provided N136 million monthly to ESUT. In February 2026, the government added N25 million monthly specifically to support the ESUT College of Medicine and cater for the salaries of 120 additional staff, bringing the monthly subvention to N161 million.

With the newly approved N115 million increase, the total monthly subvention will now rise to N276 million.

Prof. Onyia said the additional funding would help ESUT move towards meeting the salary agreement reached between ASUU and the Federal Government.

He appealed to ASUU-ESUT to reciprocate the government’s intervention by suspending the industrial action and returning to the classrooms while outstanding issues are resolved through dialogue.

He said students should not be made to bear the consequences of disagreements that could be resolved amicably, stressing the need to protect their academic progress and ensure an uninterrupted academic calendar.

The SSG reaffirmed Governor Mbah’s commitment to improving the welfare of workers and strengthening ESUT, assuring the university community that the state government would continue to support the institution within available resources.

He also urged the university management, ASUU and other stakeholders to embrace constructive dialogue and work together to resolve the outstanding issues.

The administration, he said, remains committed to positioning ESUT as a leading university of science and technology while ensuring students have access to quality and uninterrupted education.
