Political activities gathered fresh momentum in Awgu Local Government Area on Thursday as the All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign swept through the area, with party supporters turning out in large numbers to rally behind Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah and the party’s candidates ahead of the September 26, 2026 local government elections.
From the colourful display of party flags to the chants of supporters, the event projected an unmistakable message of political solidarity. But beyond the excitement of the campaign, the gathering was largely centred on one objective — mobilising Awgu voters for the APC and reaffirming support for Governor Mbah’s leadership.
The campaign rally, part of the APC’s ongoing statewide mobilisation ahead of the council elections, brought together party leaders, elected officials, traditional rulers, community stakeholders, women, youths and supporters from across the local government.
Addressing the gathering, the Executive Chairman of Awgu LGA and APC chairmanship candidate, Hon. Uchenna Joseph Okolo, placed the achievements of Governor Mbah at the heart of his appeal for support.
According to Okolo, the governor’s development agenda has produced visible projects and interventions across Enugu State, giving the APC what he described as a strong record to campaign on.
He declared:
“Governor Peter Mbah leads, and we follow.”
Okolo said the administration’s interventions could be seen across communities and political wards, particularly in areas such as education, healthcare, roads, security and other infrastructure.
He expressed appreciation to Governor Mbah for what he described as his commitment to transforming the state, stressing that the impact of the administration had become difficult for residents to ignore.
“Everyone here comes from a political ward, and there is no political ward in Enugu State that does not have projects ongoing or completed, starting from smart schools, health centres and more,” he stated.
The Awgu council boss subsequently raised the political stakes by promising that the local government would work towards delivering an overwhelming victory for the APC chairmanship and councillorship candidates in the forthcoming election.
He also reiterated his support for Governor Mbah’s political direction as the state gradually moves towards the 2027 general elections.
For the APC, the Awgu rally offered an opportunity not only to campaign for its candidates but also to consolidate its grassroots structures ahead of what promises to be a keenly contested council election.
Party leaders who addressed the supporters urged them to remain united, mobilised and committed to the party as the September 26 poll approaches.
Among those present and who addressed the gathering were the APC Enugu West Zonal Chairman, Hon. Chimobi Akajiugo; Hon. Ralph Onovo; Hon. Nze Chimobi David; Dr. Uche Anichukwu, APC candidate for Awgu North State Constituency; Hon. Charles Ezenta; Hon. Ginika Tor; Hon. Anthony Chukwudi Nwankwo, member representing Awgu North State Constituency and Deputy Majority Leader of the Enugu State House of Assembly; Rt. Hon. Jane Eneh; Dr. Oby Aji, APC Zonal Women Leader, South-East; and Ben Nwoye, APC Vice Chairman, South.
Several speakers also highlighted Okolo’s grassroots activities, philanthropic interventions and human-capital development initiatives, particularly his “One Day, One Project” programme.
They equally praised the party leadership for presenting Okolo and his running mate, Hon. Dr. Stanley Uchenna Ezediuto, as the APC chairmanship and deputy chairmanship candidates for the election.
A major highlight of the rally was the presentation of the APC flag to Okolo and Ezediuto, alongside the distribution of party flags to the APC councillorship candidates representing the various wards in Awgu.
Presenting the flags, APC Enugu State Chairman, Dr. Martin Chukwunweike, commended the people of Awgu for their support for the party and the Mbah administration.
He urged party members to preserve their unity and intensify grassroots mobilisation in the remaining days before the election.
The campaign also attracted prominent political leaders, government officials and traditional rulers, including Senator Osita Ngwu, represented by his Chief of Staff, Hon. Emeka Aneke; Hon. Engr. Anayo Onwuegbu, member representing Aninri/Awgu/Oji-River Federal Constituency, represented by his Senior Legislative Aide, Hon. Sir Ephraim Offia; Hon. Chima Atu, member representing Enugu North/Enugu South Federal Constituency; Hon. Comr. Obinta Juliet, SSA to the APC National Chairman on Youth Mobilisation; Hon. Ken Oforma, SSA to the Executive Governor of Enugu State; and Hon. Emeka Nwogbo, SSA to the Governor on Youth Mobilisation, West, among others.
Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah was represented at the occasion by the APC State Chairman, Dr. Martin Chukwunweike.
With the campaign now moving deeper into the grassroots, the APC’s message in Awgu was clear: the party intends to translate its organisational strength and the enthusiasm displayed at the rally into actual votes on election day.
For Okolo and his supporters, the September 26 election is therefore more than a contest for council leadership. It is also an opportunity to demonstrate Awgu’s political alignment with Governor Mbah and the APC ahead of the wider political battles to come.
The rally ended amid renewed chants, celebrations and a strong show of party solidarity.
Whether Thursday’s impressive mobilisation will translate into the sweeping victory promised by the APC, however, will ultimately be determined by the voters when they step into the polling units on September 26.
For now, Awgu’s APC has sounded its battle cry — and Okolo is promising nothing short of victory.
