The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Enugu State has accused Governor Peter Mbah of imposing what it described as a “ruthless and inhuman tax regime” on residents and businesses across the state.
The opposition party made the allegation in a statement signed by Paul Anigbogu on behalf of its Media Team to mark the commencement of its campaign for the 2027 governorship and House of Assembly elections.
The ADC claimed that Mbah’s administration had imposed unprecedented financial burdens on residents already struggling with the effects of the fuel subsidy removal.
It also criticised the governor’s urban renewal programme, alleging that massive demolitions in Enugu and Nsukka had destroyed businesses and displaced hundreds of traders, particularly at Old Park and Ogige Market.
According to the party, taxes, utility rates, business premises charges and property taxes were subsequently increased, further worsening the burden on residents and businesses.
The ADC also accused Mbah of failing to fulfil his 2023 campaign promise to restore potable water supply in Enugu within 180 days of assuming office, alleging that water scarcity remained widespread in the state.
The party further criticised projects attributed to the administration, including smart schools, Type-3 hospitals and road projects, describing some as poorly executed.
It also questioned the funds spent on the projects, alleging that over N1 trillion in federal allocations and internally generated revenue had accrued to the state since Mbah assumed office in May 2023.
On the governor’s unveiling of a book documenting his administration’s projects and achievements, the ADC described the exercise as a “campaign gimmick,” arguing that successful projects should speak for themselves.
The party also raised questions over an alleged N5 billion smart school contract, claiming that a contractor abandoned the project and returned about N1 billion. It demanded clarification on the remaining funds and the state of the project.
