Inter Miami superstar, Lionel Messi, has been fined by Major League Soccer, MLS, for slapping Philadelphia Union forward Quinn Sullivan during their 2-2 draw.

MLS confirmed on Friday that both Messi and Inter Miami defender Ian Fray were fined undisclosed amounts for their involvement in the confrontation.

Messi scored one goal and provided an assist during Wednesday night’s encounter but later became involved in a heated exchange with Sullivan, whom he slapped on the back of the neck.

Sullivan was also involved in the incident that resulted in Fray being sanctioned after the Inter Miami defender made contact with an opponent’s neck.

The match ended with two red cards being shown during stoppage time after a scuffle off the ball.

Inter Miami’s Yannick Bright and Philadelphia Union’s Cavan Sullivan, Quinn Sullivan’s brother, were both sent off following the incident.

However, MLS announced that Cavan Sullivan’s red card and one-match suspension had been overturned.

The league said its Independent Review Panel unanimously voted to rescind the sanction handed to the Philadelphia Union player.

Messi’s fine comes after an otherwise impressive performance in which the Argentine captain contributed directly to both of Inter Miami’s goals.
