Reality TV star, Terseer Waya, popularly known as Kiddwaya, has sparked debate after suggesting that Nigeria might have achieved greater development if Britain had retained colonial control of the country for another 10 to 15 years.
Kiddwaya made the comment in a recent post on X, describing Nigeria’s independence in 1960 as premature.
He wrote, “Unpopular opinion. The British should have stayed in Nigeria for 10/15 more years. You go see better development.”
His position has generated mixed reactions on social media.
While some Nigerians agreed with him, arguing that the country’s development challenges could partly be linked to the quality of leadership since independence, others strongly disagreed.
Critics of the view argued that extending colonial rule would likely have allowed Britain to continue exploiting Nigeria’s natural resources rather than prioritising the country’s long-term development.
Nigeria gained independence from Britain on October 1, 1960, before becoming a republic in 1963 and severing its remaining constitutional ties with the British monarchy.
