Paul Ibe, media aide to African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, has called on the National Assembly to commence impeachment proceedings against President Bola Tinubu.
Ibe made the call during an interview on News Central TV, alleging that Tinubu violated the Constitution by extending his working vacation in Europe without transmitting the required declaration to the National Assembly.
He cited Section 151 of the Constitution, arguing that a president proceeding on vacation or otherwise unable to perform his duties is required to transmit a written declaration to the President of the Senate and Speaker of the House of Representatives.
“The National Assembly should initiate impeachment procedures against the president. He should be impeached for going contrary to the Constitution,” Ibe said.
He questioned whether Tinubu had transmitted the required letter to the National Assembly, noting that the President had been away for more than 21 days and was reportedly not expected back until the weekend.
Tinubu had travelled to London before moving to Paris, France, where he met with French President Emmanuel Macron. He subsequently extended his working vacation by a few days.
However, presidential aide Daniel Bwala defended the President’s absence, maintaining that Tinubu could govern Nigeria from anywhere in the world.
