The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has called on the Nigeria Police Force to take proactive measures over the attack on its presidential candidate in Benue State.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, made the call on Friday during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily.
Director commended the police for arresting 46 suspects allegedly linked to the attack but urged authorities to ensure the matter was not swept under the carpet.
He called on the Inspector-General of Police to ensure that those arrested are properly prosecuted and that the outcome of the process is made public.
“The police should have prevented those miscreants and hoodlums from gathering at that place to block our presidential candidate from entering Benue,” he said.
According to him, the suspects should have been arrested at the scene rather than waiting for the incident to occur before taking action.
While commending the police for investigating the incident and arresting suspects, Director stressed that accountability must go beyond announcing arrests.
He urged the police to provide Nigerians with updates on the prosecution and eventual outcome of the case.
