The national leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Seriake Dickson, has said Nigerians will be able to contribute as little as N1,000 towards funding the party’s campaign activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Dickson disclosed this during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Wednesday.
The former Bayelsa State governor described the NDC as the only political party in Nigeria that does not receive funding from the government treasury.
He argued that allowing wealthy individuals to bankroll political parties using government resources would further deepen oppression in the country.
“We want a process by which Nigerians, ordinary Nigerians, can contribute N1,000, N2,000, as happens all over the world,” Dickson said.
He said the initiative was aimed at giving ordinary Nigerians a role in financing the party and helping them break away from what he described as political oppression by wealthy individuals.
Dickson also disclosed that the party was consulting on the composition of its presidential campaign council and would announce its members soon.
He called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies and other relevant institutions to ensure that the 2027 elections are free, fair and credible.
