A United States representative, Anna Paulina, has raised concerns over what she described as recurring attacks and killings of Christians and other civilians in communities across Plateau State.
Paulina made the allegations in a statement shared on her verified X account on Friday, accusing the Nigerian federal and state governments of not doing enough to protect residents from the attacks.
In a post titled, “What is happening in Nigeria right now?”, the US lawmaker said thousands of Christians in Plateau were facing what she described as a serious security threat, while Nigerian security forces struggled to contain the violence.
According to her, hundreds of armed men allegedly attacked Christian communities across the state.
“Thousands of civilians are under mortal threat while the Nigerian Army and security forces struggle to hold the line,” she wrote.
Paulina also cited several alleged incidents preceding the latest attacks, including the killing of a pastor and his church secretary while travelling to church.
She further alleged that five Christians were ambushed while travelling in a vehicle, while a civilian guard was killed outside his home and a man and his son were beaten and left critically injured.
The US representative also questioned why security warnings and alerts issued before the attacks were allegedly not acted upon by Nigerian security agencies.
