Two persons have been confirmed dead following a flood incident that struck Malari, Pompomari and surrounding communities in Damaturu Local Government Area of Yobe State after a heavy rainfall on Sunday.

This was contained in a Flash Flood Incident Report issued by the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).

According to the report, the victims have been identified as Isa Haruna, 38, a security personnel attached to Mallam Matari, and Abba Kyari, 18, who reportedly drowned in the Pompomari area.

The Yobe SEMA Search and Rescue Team, in collaboration with the State Fire Service, Damaturu, responded to the incident.

“Upon arrival at the scene, the victims were confirmed dead and their bodies were conveyed to the mortuary at the General Sani Abacha Specialist Hospital, Damaturu,” the report read.

Following the incident, the State Emergency Management Agency has urged the public, particularly parents and guardians, to closely supervise children as schools are currently on vacation.

The agency also listed six precautionary measures, including avoiding flooded roads and waterways, keeping children away from rivers and culverts, and reporting emergencies to SEMA.

Other measures include clearing blocked drainages, staying alert to weather warnings, moving to higher ground during floods, and avoiding contact with potentially contaminated water.

Authorities are yet to give an estimate of the property damage caused by the flood in the affected areas.
