US President Donald Trump has criticised the United Nations, accusing the organisation of failing to adequately address the persecution of Christians in several countries.

Trump made the remarks on Tuesday while addressing world leaders at the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), where he also criticised the UN Human Rights Council for focusing heavily on issues involving the United States.

He accused the council of condemning US immigration enforcement and policies concerning transgender minors while, in his view, paying insufficient attention to persecution of Christians and abuses by repressive governments.

Trump also criticised the UN’s approach to migration, arguing that there is no human right to illegal immigration and stressing the importance of national sovereignty.

On Iran, the US President described the country as the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism and reiterated his opposition to it acquiring nuclear weapons.

Addressing Cuba, Trump said communism would not take hold in the United States and expressed his expectation of greater freedom in Cuba as well as improved security in Mexico.

Trump also rejected what he described as a globalist approach to regulating artificial intelligence, arguing against efforts to slow the development of AI amid growing concerns among some technology experts and researchers about its potential risks.
