1. Nigeria’s Inflation Rate Drops to 15.43%, Food Prices Rise
Nigeria’s headline inflation rate fell to 15.43 per cent in July 2026, representing a 0.48 percentage-point decline from the 15.91 per cent recorded in June.
The latest Consumer Price Index released by the National Bureau of Statistics, however, showed renewed pressure on food prices, with food inflation accelerating significantly on a month-on-month basis.
2. Edo Assembly Speaker Resigns Amid Impeachment Rumours
The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku, has resigned from his position amid reports of an impending impeachment.
Agbebaku announced his resignation during Monday’s plenary, which was marked by disputes over who had the authority to preside over the sitting.
3. Ondo Police Arrest Man Over Alleged Murder of Mother
The Ondo State Police Command has arrested Samuel Akoade for allegedly hacking his mother, Mrs Olufunke Akoade, to death in Ore, Odigbo Local Government Area.
The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday evening in the Powerline area of the community. The suspect is alleged to have attacked his mother with a machete, inflicting injuries that led to her death.
4. NDLEA Destroys 4.6 Tonnes of Cannabis, Arrests 10 Suspects in Edo
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, in Edo State has destroyed two cannabis plantations weighing a combined 4,628.9 kilogrammes.
The agency also arrested 10 suspected drug traffickers during separate operations across the state.
The state Commander of the NDLEA, Mitchell Ofoyeju, disclosed this on Monday.
5. 2027 Elections: Police Assure Nigerians of Adequate Security
The Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 2 Command, Olohundare Jimoh, has assured Nigerians that the police are fully prepared to provide adequate security during the 2027 general elections.
Jimoh gave the assurance on Monday at the command headquarters, saying there was no reason for Nigerians to panic ahead of the elections.
6. Naira Appreciates to N1,349.53 Against Dollar
The naira strengthened by N8.07 against the United States dollar at the official foreign exchange market on Monday.
According to data published by the Central Bank of Nigeria, the naira closed at N1,349.53 per dollar, compared with N1,357.60 recorded on Friday.
7. ASUU-KASU Raises Alarm Over Exit of Over 200 Lecturers
The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Kaduna State University chapter, has raised concerns over the departure of more than 200 lecturers from the institution.
The ASUU-KASU Chairman, Dr Abubakar Abdullahi, disclosed this on Monday, attributing the exodus to poor working conditions and the non-implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement.
8. Four Almajiris Reportedly Die After Eating Suspected Contaminated Food in Kano
At least four Almajiris, or Qur’anic school pupils, have reportedly died in Kano after eating food suspected to have been contaminated.
The incident was confirmed on Monday by the National Chairman of the Tsangaya Media Network, Alaramma Sani Musa Nuhu.
9. Police Impound Five Air Peace Vehicles Over Lagos Airport Incident
The number of Air Peace vehicles impounded by the police for investigation following the recent Lagos airport runway blockade has risen from three to five.
The vehicles reportedly in police custody are marked AJJ 589EX, KTU 440EZ, AAA 831F, KTU 85FH and EPE 656HF.
10. Osun Workers Rally in Support of Governor Adeleke
Organised labour in Osun State on Monday staged a rally at the entrance of the State Secretariat in Abere, Osogbo, to celebrate Governor Ademola Adeleke’s electoral victory.
The workers attributed his return to office to what they described as his administration’s worker-friendly policies and improved welfare for pensioners.
