President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has promised that Nigerians will begin to experience lower transportation costs from October 2026.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Saturday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

According to the statement, the promise is part of ongoing efforts under the National Affordable Compressed Natural Gas, CNG, Transit Programme.

The President said he reached an agreement with the 36 state governors during a meeting on August 27, with the objective of achieving measurable reductions in transportation costs from October 1.

Tinubu said an implementation committee for the National Affordable CNG Transit Programme was subsequently established under the auspices of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, with Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, serving as chairman.

He noted that significant work is already underway involving the committee, PI-CNG and electric vehicle stakeholders, state governments and other critical partners.

The President said the stakeholders are working to identify priority transport corridors, determine appropriate interventions and put the necessary arrangements in place.

He added that the initiative has become increasingly urgent in view of the current global energy crisis.
