Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has questioned the independence of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive ordering the agency to vacate the court order freezing the Osun State Government’s bank account.
Reacting to the development, Sowore argued that if the President could simply direct the EFCC to reverse its action, then the agency’s independence existed only in theory.
He maintained that such a directive raises concerns about the operational autonomy of the anti-graft commission and the extent to which it can function without executive influence.
Sowore’s remarks come amid public debate over the freezing of the Osun State Government’s account and President Tinubu’s subsequent instruction to the EFCC to withdraw the court order.
