Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo could face a suspension of up to six months from representing the national team if he is found to have unjustifiably abandoned the squad.
According to the Daily Mail, the possible ban ranges from one to six months under the Portuguese Football Federation’s disciplinary code.
The code states that any player who, after being regularly called up, unjustifiably fails to attend training, a match or any activity involving the national team or the sporting representation of the federation or Portugal may be suspended for one to six months.
Ronaldo reportedly left Portugal’s camp on Wednesday following a disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus over playing time.
The 41-year-old was subsequently replaced by Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes as captain.
Galatasaray winger Rafael Leao also wore Ronaldo’s No. 7 shirt as Portugal faced Denmark in the UEFA Nations League.
The circumstances surrounding Ronaldo’s departure could determine whether the federation considers disciplinary action under its rules.
