The Nasarawa State Police Command has urged political parties in the state to suspend rallies scheduled for October 10, 2026, over security concerns ahead of the visit of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, to Lafia.

The First Lady is expected to attend the All Progressives Congress (APC) North Central Grassroots Mobilisation Movement at Lafia Square on Saturday as the event’s Special Guest of Honour.

In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ramhan Nansel, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Shetima Jauro Mohammed, the Command said the appeal was intended to prevent clashes between rival political supporters, avert security breaches and stop hoodlums from disrupting political activities.

The police added that suspending the rallies would help ensure the safe movement of the First Lady and other dignitaries expected at the event.

While acknowledging the constitutional rights of political parties to freedom of association, peaceful assembly and political participation, the Command appealed to party leaders and stakeholders to cooperate by rescheduling their rallies.

“The Command recognises and respects the constitutional rights of all political parties to freedom of association, peaceful assembly and political participation.

“However, in the interest of public safety and peaceful conduct of political activities, we urge stakeholders to cooperate by rescheduling their gatherings to a later date,” the statement said.

CP Mohammed reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to ensuring a level playing field for all political parties and enforcing the rule of law during political activities across the state.

He also thanked political parties and residents for their continued cooperation with the police, urging them to remain peaceful and law-abiding.
