One person has been killed in a road accident involving a commercial bus at Iye-Maja Junction along the Oko-Olowo Highway in Ilorin, Kwara State.

The incident occurred at about 6:35 p.m. on Sunday when the bus, with registration number DTH840SA and carrying 21 passengers, reportedly lost control after a tyre burst.

The vehicle subsequently somersaulted before catching fire.

Spokesman for the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, said firefighters quickly arrived at the scene and commenced emergency operations.

“The passengers were evacuated from the vehicle, with those who sustained injuries taken to the hospital for medical attention.

“Sadly, one person was confirmed dead in the incident,” he said.

The Fire Service sympathised with the family of the deceased and wished those injured a speedy recovery.

The Chief Fire Officer, Alabi Muhammed, urged motorists, particularly commercial vehicle operators, to ensure their vehicles are properly maintained and roadworthy before embarking on journeys.

He stressed the need for regular inspection of tyres, braking systems, electrical components and other critical parts, noting that early detection of faults could help prevent serious road accidents.

Alabi also urged motorists to exercise caution on highways and promptly report emergencies to the appropriate response agencies.
