There was outrage on Saturday after a viral video showed police officers allegedly assaulting a young man in the Ijagba area of Ota, Ogun State, over claims that he was wearing camouflage shorts.

The video, initially posted on TikTok by HairbyArik and later shared on X by @Godsboy441, showed the young man handcuffed and pinned to the ground as officers attempted to force him into a commercial minibus.

His cries for help attracted residents, who came out and confronted the policemen over their treatment of the young man.

“Between you and these young men, who are the thieves? See the way they are beating someone’s child,” a woman was heard saying in the background.

Another woman was also heard shouting, “Please come to my aid everyone!”

The officers were alleged to have accused the young man of wearing camouflage clothing, which is prohibited for civilians. However, residents resisted the arrest, describing the officers’ actions as brutality.

The footage, which has garnered over 8,900 likes on TikTok, showed a crowd surrounding the officers and demanding that they remove the handcuffs.

After several minutes of argument, the policemen reportedly abandoned the arrest and left the community amid cheers from residents.

The woman who recorded the incident also alleged that the officers threatened to arrest her for filming them.

Reacting on Sunday, the Ogun State Police Command confirmed that it had identified and apprehended the officers involved in the incident.

In a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, had ordered immediate action in accordance with established procedures.

“The officers involved have been identified, and the Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, CP Bode Ojajuni, has ordered immediate action in line with established procedures,” Babaseyi said.

“The Command remains committed to accountability, professional discipline and the highest standards of policing. Further updates will be communicated as developments warrant,” he added.

In a subsequent statement, the police spokesperson disclosed that the four officers were being taken to the command’s headquarters.

“The four officers are en route to the headquarters,” Babaseyi stated.

The incident comes days before the sixth anniversary of the #EndSARS protests against police brutality, scheduled for October 20.
