The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has maintained that an error in the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) publication of candidates’ particulars does not affect its nomination for the Edo South Senatorial District.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by the party’s Director of New Media and Strategic Communication, Agada Abuh Theophilus, the NDC reaffirmed that Mrs. Epelle-Asemota Bridgitte Osayuki remains its duly nominated candidate for the senatorial election.

According to the party, while INEC correctly published Mrs. Epelle-Asemota’s name and personal details, the commission mistakenly attached the photograph and credentials of another aspirant.

The NDC insisted that it properly submitted its candidate’s name, passport photograph and credentials to INEC in line with the Constitution and the Electoral Act, describing the mix-up as an administrative error.

The party stressed that under the law, a candidate is recognised through formal sponsorship and submission of their name by a political party, adding that this process was duly followed in Mrs. Epelle-Asemota’s case.

It also called on INEC to explain how the error occurred and urged the commission to correct the published records.

The NDC further condemned what it described as attempts to question Mrs. Epelle-Asemota’s candidacy on ethnic grounds, stating that she is a Nigerian citizen of Benin ancestry who has lived and worked in Benin throughout her life.

While acknowledging that some aspirants were dissatisfied with the outcome of the party’s primaries, the NDC urged members to remain united and avoid actions capable of undermining the party.
