The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Josiah Amupitan, has assured Nigerians and political parties that the commission will remain neutral in the 2027 general elections.

Amupitan gave the assurance on Tuesday at the National Peace Accord ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

He said INEC had no interest in determining which candidate or political party wins, stressing that the commission would not favour any platform.

“INEC has no interest in who wins or loses any election. The commission does not have a candidate, nor does it favour any political platform,” Amupitan said.

The INEC chairman urged political parties and candidates to focus their campaigns on issues and practical solutions rather than personal attacks, insults and violence.

“Let the 2027 election campaign be a marketplace of ideas, not a theatre of war,” he said.

Amupitan said Nigerians wanted solutions to their challenges and urged political actors to present clear, concrete and measurable manifestos.

He also said preparations for the 2027 elections were progressing, noting that INEC was expanding its logistics to accommodate the large workforce required for the nationwide exercise.

According to him, the commission is preparing to deploy about 1.4 million ad hoc personnel across more than 176,000 polling units.

He assured Nigerians that INEC would build on previous preparations to deliver a credible election in 2027.
