Technology is increasingly becoming more than a tool for sending money, paying bills and running businesses, with digital platforms also creating opportunities in education, innovation and economic empowerment.
This approach is reflected in OPay’s growing social impact initiatives in Nigeria, which focus on education, skills development, innovation and financial inclusion.
One of the company’s major initiatives is the OPay Scholars Programme, which includes the National Innovation Challenge, the OPay Futures programme and a ₦1.2 billion, 10-year scholarship commitment. The scholarship initiative has so far reached more than 1,200 direct beneficiaries.
The National Innovation Challenge, implemented in partnership with Google and 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT), supports young Nigerians with ideas and technical skills to develop solutions to real-world problems.
OPay’s social impact efforts also include the Play4aChild initiative, which has supported more than 14,000 direct beneficiaries through educational materials and other interventions aimed at improving children’s learning experiences.
The company has also focused on women’s economic empowerment through its Women Empowerment Programme, which has provided more than 100 women with skills development, capacity building and startup support.
According to the initiative’s approach, the goal is not only to provide short-term assistance but also to equip beneficiaries with skills and resources that can help them generate income, strengthen businesses and become more financially independent.
The programmes demonstrate how technology companies can leverage their resources, networks and partnerships to create opportunities beyond their core digital services.
With more than 1,200 beneficiaries through the OPay Scholars Programme, over 14,000 through Play4aChild and more than 100 women supported through its empowerment programme, OPay’s social impact activities highlight the potential of technology-driven businesses to contribute to education, youth development and economic inclusion in Nigeria.
