— Commends Governor Mbah’s leadership, backs Prince Charles Ezenta for Awgu North Assembly seat, pledges stronger grassroots mobilisation for APC
Hon. Sunday Ignatius Okafor, the newly appointed Special Assistant to the Enugu State Governor on Political and Grassroots Mobilisation, has congratulated the Executive Chairman of Awgu Local Government Area, Hon. Uchenna Joseph Okolo, on his re-election for a second term in office.
Okolo, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was declared winner of the Awgu chairmanship election held on Saturday, September 26, 2026. The result formed part of the wider outcome of the Enugu State local government elections, in which the APC won all 17 chairmanship seats declared by the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC).
In his congratulatory message, Okafor described Okolo’s re-election as a significant development for Awgu, while expressing confidence that the chairman would use his renewed mandate to consolidate on his administration’s programmes and strengthen grassroots development across the local government.
Okafor also expressed appreciation to Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah for finding him worthy of appointment into the Enugu State Government as Special Assistant on Political and Grassroots Mobilisation.
Governor Mbah recently approved the appointment of 101 new aides, comprising seven Special Advisers, six Senior Special Assistants and 88 Special Assistants, with responsibilities covering various areas of governance, including political mobilisation, grassroots engagement and community development. Reports on the official appointment list identify Sunday Ignatius Okafor as Special Assistant on Political and Grassroots Mobilisation.
According to Okafor, the appointment represents both an honour and a responsibility, adding that he would deploy his experience and network to support grassroots engagement and strengthen communication between the government, political stakeholders and communities.
OKAFOR BACKS EZENTA FOR AWGU NORTH
The Governor’s grassroots mobilisation aide also commended Governor Mbah for what he described as his political leadership and inclusive approach to party affairs.
He specifically welcomed the emergence of Prince Charles Ezenta, whom he identified as the APC candidate for the Enugu State House of Assembly seat representing Awgu North Constituency.
Okafor said the choice of Ezenta was a positive development for Owelle-Court, Awgu North and Enugu State, expressing optimism that the candidate would attract strong grassroots support ahead of the 2027 general election.
He further linked Governor Mbah’s political leadership with the administration’s infrastructural development efforts across the state, saying that the governor’s approach to governance had combined physical development with broader political and grassroots engagement.
“WE ARE GIVING IT ALL TO OUR GOVERNOR AND APC CANDIDATES”
Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, Okafor pledged to utilise his new office to mobilise support and solidarity for Governor Mbah and APC candidates across the state.
He said his immediate responsibility would be to deepen grassroots engagement, build stronger relationships with communities and stakeholders, and mobilise citizens around the programmes and candidates of the APC.
Okafor maintained that the party’s grassroots structure would remain critical to its political activities ahead of 2027, stressing the need for sustained engagement with youths, women, community leaders, political stakeholders and other relevant groups.
He called on APC members and supporters to remain united and committed, while promising that his office would continue to contribute to efforts aimed at strengthening the party’s presence at the grassroots.
The statement comes shortly after the September 26 local government elections, where the APC secured all 17 chairmanship positions in Enugu State, according to results announced by ENSIEC on September 27.
