FROM THE MARKET STALL TO ECONOMIC GROWTH: PETER MBAH’S ₦840M+ INVESTMENT IN 14,000 WOMEN

For His Excellency, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, economic growth is only meaningful when its impact reaches our markets, communities and households.

Through NG-CARES 1.0 Result Area 3, the Mbah Administration invested ₦60,000 each in over 14,000 women nanoentrepreneurs across market clusters in every ward across all 17 LGAs of Enugu State representing *over ₦840 million injected directly into the grassroots economy**l.

Implemented through the Enugu MSME & Startup Agency (Enugu SME Center), the State’s Focal Agency for Result Areas 3.2 and 3.3, the intervention reflects a deliberate strategy to provide financial and productive asset support to businesses that conventional finance often struggles to reach.

Our statewide nanoenterprise data reinforces why this matters: 68% of nanoenterprises are women-owned, 92.55% do not operate business bank accounts, while 70.12% still transact primarily in cash.

Governor Mbah’s approach recognises a fundamental truth: the woman trading in a community market is as much a participant in Enugu’s economic transformation as the investor building a factory.

For her, ₦60,000 is not simply a grant. It is working capital, additional inventory, increased turnover and greater household resilience. Across 14,000+ businesses, that capital flows to suppliers, farmers, producers and transporters, creating a multiplier effect throughout the local economy.

Most importantly, this opportunity was not concentrated in Enugu metropolis. It reached market clusters in every ward across all 17 LGAs, reflecting Governor Mbah’s vision of growth that is inclusive, data-driven and deliberately decentralised.

We acknowledge the support of the World Bank* and *Bank of Industry (BOI) in delivering this intervention.

14,000+ women. Every ward. All 17 LGAs. ₦840 million+ invested at the grassroots.
