The Delta State chapter of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) has expressed concern over the frequent changes in the leadership of the Delta State Police Command, saying the trend could affect stability and security in the state.

In a statement jointly signed by the group’s Chairman, Derrick Agberen, and Publicity Secretary, Nosa Godswill, the organisation noted that Delta State has had three Commissioners of Police within the past seven months.

According to the CDHR, the repeated redeployment of Commissioners of Police has drawn attention to the office and raised questions about continuity in addressing the state’s security challenges.

While stressing that it would not interfere in the internal affairs of the Nigeria Police Force, the rights group said the frequent leadership changes warrant public concern.

The organisation, however, welcomed the appointment of the new Commissioner of Police, Samuel Erale Etaifo, describing his deployment as a positive step toward promoting fairness, equity and the federal character principle in the appointment of security chiefs.

CDHR also called for greater inclusiveness in the deployment of heads of security agencies nationwide, noting that balanced regional representation would strengthen public trust in security institutions.

The group urged the new police commissioner to prioritise effective policing, uphold the rule of law, protect fundamental human rights, enforce discipline within the police force and strengthen collaboration with communities and civil society organisations.

It added that the people of Delta State deserve professional policing, justice and improved security, pledging its support for initiatives aimed at promoting peace and public confidence in the state.
