A Maiduguri-based woman, Yakaka Yerima, has celebrated a major milestone as her adopted daughter graduated from nursery school, six years after she rescued and breastfed the child following the loss of her parents to insurgency.

In a Facebook post shared on Monday, Yakaka recounted how the little girl was orphaned after her father was killed in a terrorist attack, while her pregnant mother survived the assault but died during childbirth.

She explained that the newborn was taken to an orphanage, but after learning about the baby’s situation, she could not stop thinking about her.

At the time, Yakaka was nursing her own 11-month-old child. Moved by compassion, she adopted the orphaned baby, brought her home and breastfed both children together.

Describing the decision as one of the best and biggest of her life, Yakaka expressed joy and gratitude as she watched her adopted daughter graduate from nursery school, celebrating the remarkable journey from tragedy to hope.
