The Executive Chairman of Awgu Local Government Area, Hon. Uchenna Joseph Okolo, has inaugurated a high-powered Steering Committee to coordinate the All Progressives Congress (APC) electoral campaign ahead of the September 26, 2026 Local Government elections and the 2027 general elections.
The committee was inaugurated on Sunday, August 30, 2026, with a mandate to mobilise stakeholders, strengthen political structures, promote unity and work towards securing overwhelming electoral support for APC candidates across Awgu Local Government Area.
Speaking during the inauguration, Hon. Okolo said the committee was constituted to “dot the i’s and cross the t’s” and deploy every legitimate strategy necessary to achieve electoral success, provided such actions remain within the provisions of the law.
The Chairman said the primary interest of Awgu must remain at the centre of the electoral project, stressing the need for effective coordination and mobilisation ahead of the forthcoming chairmanship and councillorship elections as well as the 2027 presidential, governorship, senatorial, House of Representatives and State House of Assembly elections.
He declared that the re-election of Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, was non-negotiable for the committee, while expressing similar determination to deliver strong support for the party’s candidates in other elective positions.
“Every Member Is Equal” — Okolo
Hon. Okolo charged members of the committee to work as equals, emphasising that no member was superior to another.
He called for open communication, effective coordination and the freedom for members to raise concerns, make suggestions and identify challenges that could affect the success of the electoral project.
According to him, the decision to establish the steering committee was partly aimed at reducing unnecessary meetings while creating a more effective platform for communication, coordination and execution.
He explained that members were carefully selected based on their achievements, experience and capacity in their respective fields, urging them to bring the same level of professionalism and commitment to the political assignment.
Committee Designed for Long-Term Political Structure
The Chairman stressed that the committee was not established solely for the immediate election, but was intended to lay a sustainable political foundation that could serve Awgu in future electoral cycles.
He said a successful outing would demonstrate that the people of Awgu were united, organised and capable of working collectively to achieve their political objectives.
Okolo Assures Committee of Funding
Hon. Okolo assured the committee that funding would not constitute an obstacle to the execution of its responsibilities.
He pledged to provide the necessary support required for the project, noting that he personally selected the members because of the confidence he had in their experience and ability to deliver.
He further stated that where additional support became necessary, he would approach the appropriate authorities for assistance.
Reconciliation, Stakeholder Engagement to Take Centre Stage
The Chairman announced plans for the creation of specialised sub-committees to address specific challenges within the local government.
Among them is a reconciliation committee that will identify and engage Awgu indigenes and groups with grievances, disagreements or concerns, with the objective of promoting understanding and bringing stakeholders together.
Another area of focus will be engaging individuals who support the government but may have reservations or concerns affecting their level of cooperation.
Members of the sub-committees are expected to identify such individuals and groups within their respective communities and work towards resolving outstanding issues.
Hon. Okolo said he was prepared to do everything within his capacity to promote unity and cooperation among stakeholders.
Work Begins Immediately
The Chairman declared that the inauguration marked the formal commencement of the committee’s assignment, warning that there would be no room for complacency.
He challenged members to return to the field immediately and deploy their experience, networks and professional capacity towards achieving the set objectives.
He said the electoral project was part of his determination to give back to the people of Awgu and ensure that the local government records a strong performance in the forthcoming elections.
Awgu Targets Electoral Supremacy
Setting an ambitious target for the committee, Hon. Okolo expressed determination to position Awgu among the leading local government areas in Enugu State in terms of electoral performance.
He challenged members to work towards ensuring that Awgu records an outstanding result, insisting that the local government must demonstrate its strength and organisational capacity at the polls.
Fortnightly Meetings, Strict Confidentiality
The Chairman directed the committee to meet at least once every two weeks or, at most, once a month, while remaining available for additional meetings whenever circumstances demand.
He also urged members to maintain confidentiality regarding sensitive matters discussed during the committee’s engagements, describing discretion as essential to the success of the electoral strategy.
He further directed members to properly communicate government programmes and achievements capable of mobilising support and return to their respective areas to strengthen the political structure across Awgu.

Those listed as unavoidably absent included Rt. Hon. Toby Okechukwu, Chief Francis Obasi, Chief Charles Okey Udeji, Chief Francis Nwobi, Chief Amobi Edeh, Prince Chikwado Chukwunta, Comrade Anthony Udeh and Gen. Nwoga.
At the close of the inauguration, Hon. Okolo reiterated his confidence in the committee, urging members to justify their selection through unity, discipline, effective communication and sustained grassroots mobilisation.
He maintained that the success of the electoral project would ultimately depend on the collective commitment of all stakeholders to work together towards a common objective.
With the inauguration, Awgu has officially entered a new phase of political mobilisation ahead of the September 26, 2026 Local Government election and the 2027 general elections.
