Chairman Uchenna Joseph Okolo proclaims the Legislative Council open as 11 councillors representing the 11 wards are sworn in
The Executive Chairman of Awgu Local Government Area, Hon. Uchenna Joseph Okolo, on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, formally proclaimed the Awgu Legislative Council open, paving the way for the swearing-in of 11 councillors representing the 11 wards of the local government area.
The ceremony marked a significant step in the constitution of the legislative arm of the council, with elected representatives formally taking their oaths of office and electing principal officers to coordinate the affairs of the House.
Following the proclamation by Chairman Okolo, the Clerk of the House, Mrs. Chinelo Nnam, administered the oath of office to the 11 councillors, formally ushering them into their legislative responsibilities.
Ahead of the swearing-in ceremony, the councillors elected their principal officers, who will be responsible for presiding over legislative proceedings, coordinating the activities of the House and providing leadership for the effective discharge of its responsibilities.
In the election of principal officers, Hon. Christopher Ndubuisi Okolo, representing Obeagu Ward, emerged as Leader of the Awgu Legislative Council, while Hon. Bonaventure Ikechukwu Ngeneoke of Isu/Ituku/Agbudu Ward was elected Deputy Leader.
The emergence of the new leadership establishes the structure through which the legislative council is expected to conduct its proceedings, deliberate on issues affecting the local government and represent the interests of residents across the 11 wards.
NEW LEGISLATIVE LEADERSHIP EMERGES
Other principal officers elected to serve in the legislative council include Hon. Chijioke Okolo of Agbogugu Ward, who emerged as Majority Leader, and Hon. Odenigbo Chichebe of Mgbowo Ward, who was elected Deputy Majority Leader.
Similarly, Hon. Evangelist Chinonso Orji, representing Awgu Ward 1, emerged as Chief Whip, while Hon. Sabinus Nnaemeka Okafor of Amoli/Ugbo/Ogugu/Owelli Ward was elected Deputy Chief Whip.
The elected principal officers are expected to coordinate the legislative activities of the House, maintain order during proceedings and support the organisation of legislative business in accordance with applicable laws and established procedures.
Their emergence completes the initial leadership structure of the newly inaugurated legislative council and provides a framework for the coordination of its activities.
