Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has accused former Minister of Transportation and African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate, Rotimi Amaechi, of playing a key role in the defeat of former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015, questioning his acceptance in the South-South region.
Speaking during his monthly media chat, Wike described Amaechi as a political liability, arguing that he lacks the electoral strength to deliver votes in Rivers State or across the South-South.
He questioned the basis for Amaechi’s emergence as the ADC’s vice-presidential candidate, suggesting that factors other than electoral value influenced the decision.
Wike also cited Amaechi’s performance in previous elections, claiming the former Rivers governor failed to deliver significant votes despite serving as Director-General of Muhammadu Buhari’s presidential campaigns and later supporting Atiku Abubakar in the 2023 election.
According to the FCT minister, Amaechi’s role in opposing former President Goodluck Jonathan’s second-term bid in 2015 could make it difficult for him to secure widespread support from voters in the South-South region.
Wike maintained that the region has not forgotten the events surrounding Jonathan’s defeat and suggested that Amaechi would face challenges winning the confidence of the electorate.
