President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has flagged off the reconstruction and dualisation of the 58-kilometre Ibadan–Ijebu-Ode Road linking Oyo and Ogun states, while approving the immediate reconstruction and dualisation of the 70-kilometre Abeokuta–Ibadan Road.
The President said the projects were part of the Federal Government’s efforts to improve transportation networks, strengthen economic integration and address infrastructure deficits across the South-West.
Tinubu, represented at the flag-off ceremony in Ibadan by Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, described the Ibadan–Ijebu-Ode corridor as a major economic route connecting Ibadan, Ijebu-Ode and the Lekki economic axis, with links to other parts of the South-West and the country.
He said the project was more than the construction of another road, describing it as a demonstration of his administration’s commitment to improving mobility, strengthening commerce and creating economic opportunities for Nigerians.
According to him, the 58-kilometre Ibadan–Ijebu-Ode project will involve the construction of a dual carriageway using continuous reinforced concrete pavement designed to ensure durability and safety.
The President said the contractor had assured the government that the project would be completed in less than 24 months, directing the company to mobilise fully to site and adhere strictly to approved specifications.
He also appealed to communities along the route to cooperate with the government and contractor, warning against encroachment, disruption and unreasonable demands that could delay the project.
Tinubu said the completed road would reduce travel time and transportation costs while improving the movement of agricultural produce, raw materials and finished goods between communities and markets.
The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, disclosed that the President had also directed the immediate reconstruction and dualisation of the 70-kilometre Ibadan–Abeokuta Road, with the procurement process already underway.
Umahi said Oyo State currently has 17 major road projects out of the 47 Federal Government projects being executed across the South-West.
He also highlighted other ongoing projects, including the Badagry–Sokoto Road, the Oyo–Ogbomoso Road and the resuscitated Oyo–Ibadan Road.
Stakeholders at the ceremony, including lawmakers and traditional rulers, welcomed the projects, saying the reconstruction of the roads would boost commercial activities, improve connectivity and reduce accidents and security challenges along the corridors.
The Ibadan–Ijebu-Ode Road project was awarded on May 5, 2026, and construction commenced on July 11, 2026. It is expected to be completed by June 10, 2029.
