The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reportedly placed an Osun State Government account domiciled with First Bank on a “Post No Debit” restriction, just 10 days before the state’s governorship election scheduled for August 15.

According to reports, the affected account is used for the payment of workers’ salaries.

The development followed Governor Ademola Adeleke’s earlier allegation that the anti-graft agency was planning to freeze the accounts of the state government and some top officials.

Reacting to the reported action, the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, described the move as an attempt to disrupt government operations ahead of the election.

Governor Adeleke also argued that there was no legal basis for freezing the state’s accounts, insisting that the EFCC does not have the statutory authority to take such action.

A government source was quoted as confirming that the account had been frozen, adding that the governor would address the media to provide further details on the situation.

As of the time of filing this report, the EFCC had not issued an official statement in response to the allegations.
