United States Congressman Barry Moore has introduced a bill seeking to stop the Nigerian government from paying lobbying firms in America amid concerns over alleged persecution of Christians.
The proposed legislation, H.R. 10939, would prohibit individuals and firms in the US from accepting payments to lobby on Nigeria’s behalf while the country remains designated as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC).
Moore accused the Nigerian government of spending millions of dollars on Washington lobbyists to counter criticism over attacks on Christians rather than addressing the violence.
“For too long, the Nigerian government has paid high-priced lobbyists in Washington to cover up the persecution of Christians while doing little to stop it. This bill will end that,” he said.
Under the proposal, lobbying firms that accept payments from the Nigerian government during the designation period could face sanctions.
The bill has been referred to the US House Committee on Foreign Affairs for consideration. It would need to pass the legislative process before becoming law.
