The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) governorship candidate in Lagos State, Funsho Doherty, has said the All Progressives Congress (APC) appears uncomfortable ahead of the 2027 elections, although defeating the ruling party in the state would not be easy.
Doherty made the remarks on Friday while speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show, where he argued that the APC had previously lost an election in Lagos despite being the incumbent party.
He cited the 2023 presidential election, insisting that the results declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) showed that the APC lost in the state.
“APC was defeated in 2023, if you go and look at the presidential election, APC lost, not theory, not rhetoric,” he said.
Doherty added that the results were publicly available and could be verified through INEC.
“If you go to the INEC and ask for the election result in Lagos for 2023, you will see that APC lost; so we are not talking about something from outer space,” he stated.
The NDC candidate also argued that the APC’s actions suggested that it was not entirely comfortable heading into the next election cycle.
“It’s possible that it has happened before and we will also retain the governorship election which we don’t believe will exist this time. Look at the actions of the APC itself, they are not that of one that is comfortable,” Doherty said.
However, when asked whether defeating an incumbent party would be easy, he clarified that he had made no such claim.
“I didn’t say that it will be easy,” he said.
