The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, has identified the collation of election results as a major gap in Nigeria’s electoral process.

Amupitan spoke at a national stakeholders’ meeting organised to mark 100 days to the 2027 general elections.

He said challenges surrounding the collation of results had remained a recurring issue in previous elections, stressing that the major problem was not at the voting or polling-unit level.

“I always tell my commissioners that some people have worked hard to get INEC to where it is today, and we should work harder,” he said.

According to him, the commission has a responsibility to improve on the progress made by previous administrations and hand over a stronger institution to its successors.

“So, one area I have identified as a major gap is the issue of collation of election results. The problem is actually not with the voting at the polling units,” Amupitan said.

He disclosed that INEC had introduced a safeguard designed to address discrepancies and reconcile issues arising at polling units before the results reach the collation stage.

“So that is why we have introduced a safeguard that will help us to solve every problem, reconcile every issue at the polling unit, so that collation will be seamless. And that is being handled,” he added.
