Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has called for the immediate and safe rescue of about 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members abducted while travelling to their orientation camp.
Obi described the incident as a concerning development, saying young Nigerians preparing to serve their country should be able to travel safely.
The former Anambra State governor made the call in a post on his official X handle on Sunday.
He said the abduction was a reminder of the insecurity affecting parts of the country, adding that families were increasingly worried about the safety of their loved ones while travelling.
“These young Nigerians were preparing to serve their nation, but they were unable to travel safely on our roads. Families are increasingly burdened by the fear that their loved ones could fall victim to kidnapping,” Obi said.
He stressed that protecting lives and property remained a primary responsibility of government.
Obi urged the authorities to rescue all the abducted prospective corps members and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
“We cannot continue to regard insecurity as an ordinary occurrence or act only after people’s lives have been disrupted,” he said.
He added that Nigeria should be a country where young people can travel, work and serve their nation without fear.
“I call for the immediate and safe rescue of all the abducted corps members and the arrest of those responsible,” Obi added.
