The Umunneochi Local Government Area of Abia State has clarified that the reported discovery of 28 human skulls in two communities was an old incident that occurred in August 2024, not September 2026.
The local government said there had been no recent discovery of a criminal hideout or human skulls in the area.
The clarification followed a recent statement by the Abia State Police Command that it had discovered 28 human skulls and bones in two forests around Umuaku and Nneato in Umunneochi LGA.
The media team of the council chairman, Sunday Afurobi, said the site was an abandoned camp allegedly used by suspected kidnappers and was located along the boundary between Aku community in Okigwe Local Government Area of Imo State and Nneato in Umunneochi.
According to the council, the camp was uncovered around August 2024 by joint government security operatives working with local vigilantes.
“Thus, the information is not a recent incident in Isuochi and should not be seen as such,” the council stated.
The council explained that the latest viral video of the site was recorded on September 26, 2026, during routine security operations at flashpoints around the fringes of the LGA.
It said the operation was carried out by operatives of the Abia State Police Command in collaboration with local vigilantes.
The local government maintained that Umunneochi is currently safe and peaceful and urged residents to remain calm and disregard reports suggesting that a criminal hideout had recently been discovered in Isuochi.
