Nollywood actress Mary Remmy Njoku has questioned the double standard in how people judge women who benefit from the generosity of wealthy men.
Njoku, in a social media post, asked what 17 men who constantly enjoy the wealth of a successful man while calling themselves his “boys” should be labelled if women who receive similar benefits are described as gold diggers.
She illustrated her point with the example of a man she identified as Emeka, who, according to her, returned home after becoming successful and had 17 grown men constantly around him.
The actress said the men ate his food, wore clothes he bought, had their bills paid and enjoyed his money, yet their relationship with him was described as “brotherhood,” “networking” and “loyalty.”
Njoku argued that society applies different standards to men and women who benefit from proximity to wealth.
She said while men benefiting from wealthy individuals are often given respectable descriptions, women exhibiting similar behaviour are more likely to be labelled negatively.
According to her, men, women, friends, relatives and employees can all be attracted to people whose wealth or social position makes their lives easier.
