Former presidential candidate Pat Utomi has revealed that despite being political rivals with Buba Galadima for about 50 years, the two have remained close friends.
Utomi made the remark in Abuja during the inauguration of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) National Reconciliation Committee, established to resolve internal disputes arising from the party’s congresses, convention and primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking after his appointment as chairman of the 23-member committee, Utomi said their long-standing relationship demonstrates that political disagreements do not have to destroy personal friendships.
“Buba Galadima and I have been fighting for 50 years, and we are still very good friends. So it means that we can equally make other people become friends.”
He expressed confidence that the committee would help reconcile aggrieved members and strengthen the party before the elections.
Utomi also said the NDC is positioning itself as a party focused on the future, with particular emphasis on engaging young Nigerians.
According to him, the country’s median age of about 19.5 years underscores the need to involve more youths in politics and governance.
The 23-member National Reconciliation Committee was inaugurated on August 6, 2026, to mediate disputes, settle post-primary grievances, and reunite party members ahead of campaign activities. Utomi serves as chairman, while Buba Galadima is the committee’s co-chairman.
